About the Academic Innovation Conference (AIC)
The Academic Innovation Conference (AIC) returns in 2026 for its fifth convening, continuing a growing tradition of celebrating, elevating, and learning from rural education across Western North Carolina.
Hosted by the Appalachian State University GEAR UP Partnership, AIC brings together educators, district leaders, administrators, counselors, partners, and innovators who are committed to designing meaningful, equitable learning experiences rooted in community, creativity, and opportunity.
The Power of Our StoriesThis year’s theme—The Power of Our Stories—honors the voices that shape our region’s educational landscape. Every classroom, every district, and every partnership carries stories of resilience, leadership, innovation, and transformation. AIC 2026 is a space to share those stories, learn from one another, and collectively imagine what’s possible when rural voices are centered.
Back in Asheville, NCWe are excited to return to Asheville, North Carolina, a central gathering place for Western North Carolina, and to host AIC 2026 on the campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. This location reflects our commitment to accessibility, connection, and regional collaboration.
