About me
Wes is the Assistant Director of College Access Services for App State GEAR UP. Prior to joining App State, Wes taught English/Language Arts in Title 1 schools for 7 years before becoming a school counselor. He won Teacher of the Year at the school level for his work with students who read below grade level. Wes has a combined 26 years of experience in public education, shared between teaching, counseling, and GEAR UP. Wes has a background in teaching and counseling within the School Turnaround processes. He has led school-wide PLC's in the turnaround process and coordinated service delivery within a Systems of Care team. Wes also has been a math facilitator and led the math team to high growth two years in a row. Wes is published in the area of peer mediation and has presentations about MTSS, peer mediation, and mitigating the impact of trauma on postsecondary access to his credit. Wes currently oversees education on college access processes in the GEAR UP-Appalachian State grant program, which covers 17 counties in rural western NC
