About me
Yolanda Adams, originally from Bogotá, Colombia, has proudly called Boone, North Carolina home for over two decades. Her life’s work is rooted in service, advocacy, and a deep commitment to expanding opportunity for all students, families, and communities.
For more than ten years, Yolanda served Watauga County Schools, where she worked directly with students and families to bridge language, cultural, and access gaps. In December 2023, she began a new chapter as Assistant Director for Student Leadership & Family Outreach with GEAR UP at Appalachian State University, where she now leads regional initiatives that center student voice, strengthen family engagement, and build sustainable pathways to higher education across Western North Carolina.Recently, Yolanda was appointed by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein and NCDOA Secretary Gabriel Esparza to serve as Co-Chair of the newly established Commission of Accessibility—an honor that reflects her continued commitment to expanding access for all communities across the state.
In addition to her role at Appalachian State, Yolanda is the Co-Founder and CEO of Q’ Pasa Appalachia, a community-centered platform dedicated to uplifting diverse voices, celebrating culture, and fostering connection across the High Country and surrounding regions. Through this work, she has become a trusted connector between schools, families, nonprofits, faith communities, businesses, and local organizations.
Yolanda is a firm believer in the transformative power of empowerment and education. Known for her heart-centered leadership style, she is widely recognized as a bridge builder—someone who brings people together, creates spaces of belonging, and ensures that every voice is not only heard, but valued. Her work is grounded in dignity, trust, and the belief that strong communities are built through relationships, collaboration, and shared purpose.
Deeply rooted in Boone, Yolanda lives with her husband, Jay, their four children, and their beloved puppy, Leo.
